Who Are You?

You are not your mind,
yet seldom leave it behind.

You are not your ego,
yet wear it wherever you go.

You are not your anger,
yet it is no stranger.

You are not your thoughts,
yet remain tangled in their knots.

You are not your feelings,
yet they shape your doings.

You are not your emotions,
yet they stir your every motion.

You are not your body,
yet you are somebody.

You are but a moment between two breaths,
the first inhalation that entered this incredible machine,
and the final exhalation it could not reclaim.

You are insignificant,
yet forever seeking relevance.

You are mostly kind,
yet ruthlessness lives somewhere inside.

You explain what needs no explanation,
react to what deserves no reaction.

You resist what you cannot change,
and carry what may never be your burden.

You carry so much within,
yet rarely allow yourself to rest.
Perhaps all you need
is a little silence, a little peace.

So, who are you?

Perhaps all these selves are you:
The kind, the cruel, the lost, the true.

Embrace them all, but cling to none.
Expect the worst, accept what comes.

Speak a little less.
Explain a little less.
React a little less.

Pause. Breathe. Meditate.
Let the restless mind abate.

Leave others to their ways,
let your work speak through your days.

And in the silence of it all,
perhaps you'll find yourself
beyond the rise and fall.
